It was announced earlier today that the Georgia Bulldogs and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have agreed to a home-and-home series. The Irish will host the first game on September 9th of 2017 in South Bend and Georgia will host the second game on September 21st of 2019.
The two teams have met just one time in their history and if you’ve been around for a while you probably remember that game. It took place on January 1st in 1981 in the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs beat the Irish 17-10 and with that victory were propelled to a National Championship.
With this game the Irish will continue their southern invasion. They add this series to their partial ACC membership, which will have them travel to, among others, Florida State in 2014 and Clemson in 2015. In addition to being a marquee match-up, this game will help the Irish attempt to get a better foothold in recruiting in this area.
For Georgia, they will tread in unfamiliar waters when they head out of the south for their 2017 game in Indiana. Georgia has been flirting with a big name (non-rival) out-of-conference opponent for a while and had a potential series with Ohio State canceled.
College football needs more games like this. Even if you don’t have a dog in the fight, having two big name schools match-up early in the fall is must see TV and it’s a great decision for both schools.
