SEC Key Learnings from Week Two

The SEC took center stage in week two as Florida traveled to Miami and Georgia hosted South Carolina. What did we learn in week two?

GEORGIA'S SEASON ISN'T OVER YET

After an opening game loss to Clemson, some wrote off the Georgia Bulldogs. With rival South Carolina coming to town and Georgia having dropped their last three games to the Gamecocks it was easy to see how. But Georgia put it all on the table on Saturday and came away with not only the victory but also the inside track to the SEC East Title. Game balls went to Aaron Murray and Todd Gurley for their performance as well as Mike Bobo for a solid offensive game-plan and Mark Richt for taking chances when he needed to take them. It also didn't hurt that the offensive line showed up this week.

FLORIDA NEEDS TO FIND A PLAY-MAKER

I already talked a bit about Florida on this site and I still see the Gators major issues as the inability to push the ball down the field on offense and their lack of play-makers. The Gators defense is good enough to win the SEC East but until they find someone who can make a big play for them on offense, they will be third fiddle, at best, in the East.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD FOR THE GAMECOCKS

Maybe the Gamecocks were a bit too confident coming to Athens on a three game win streak against Georgia. Last year, at home, we saw the Gamecocks jump out against Georgia with a superior game plan. This year, we saw a team that played well at times but got beat up down the stretch. In the fourth quarter, Georgia brought out the hammer and just drove the ball and the game down the Gamecocks collective throats. The defense wilted at the end of the game and that's something to watch the rest of the season. The other thing to watch is the offensive gameplan. The Gamecocks didn't give the ball to RB Mike Davis enough and they got away from running with Connor Shaw.

WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM SCHEDULING DOWN?

The rest of the SEC was off or scheduled down in competition. Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Missouri, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Auburn all scheduled down this week in anticipation of the coming weeks. Missouri and Arkansas survived, while everybody else took care of business pretty quickly. Hopefully they enjoyed their paid off-week.
