The 8-3 LSU Tigers were a 28 point favorite against the 3-9 Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday afternoon. The battle of the "Golden Boot" didn't go quite as Vegas, and most, expected it to go.
The Arkansas Razorbacks have had a tough first season under Bret Bielema but they've shown flashes against Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. They played LSU tough in this game and were in a good position to win late in the fourth quarter.
LSU looked a little lethargic on senior night. I guess that's what happens when ten underclassmen declare for the NFL Draft. Your senior nights don't have quite that same vibe. One senior that wanted to go out with a bang was Zach Mettenberger. Instead, Mett went 14 of 22 for 156 yards with an INT and left the game in the fourth quarter with a leg injury.
LSU was forced to turn to freshman Anthony Jennings. Down 27-21, Jennings took over in the middle of a drive in Arkansas territory. LSU was held to a FG. With 3:04 left, Jennings got the ball back in a must-score drive for the Tigers. Jennings completed 3 of 5 passes and added a 21 yard run to get the Tigers into Arkansas territory with 1:22 left on the clock. Then Jennings found Travin Dural, another freshman, wide open down the sideline for a 49 yard TD.
For Zach Mettenberger this was a tough way to go out. The big question for Mett is what type of injury did he sustain? Is he headed for a long re-hab period like his former teammate Aaron Murray? With the draft looming, having two QBs that were probably headed for day two of the draft really puts a twist on the QB draft prospects and also into the future of these two young players.
For LSU, they may have found a star of the future in Anthony Jennings.
