When you think of Hail Mary plays in college football, there are probably two that quickly come to mind. For me it is Kordell Stewart's pass to lift Colorado to a win at Michigan in 1994 and perhaps one of the most famous plays in college football history, Doug Flutie's prayer against Miami. On Saturday, under much less strenuous circumstances, Boston College wound up on the wrong end of a miraculous Hail Mary play.
Boston College took a 17-3 lead on the Florida State Seminoles early in the second quarter but Jameis Winston and Florida State roared back before heading to halftime. Winston completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Rashad Greene and a 10-yard pass to Chad Abram to tie the game at 17-17 late in the first half. Florida State ended up having enough time to try one last play in the half, the typical Hail Mary pass from just past midfield. On this day, the quarterback who has already been depicted as Jesus, delivered a miracle you just have to see to believe.
My criticism here falls on Boston College. Man-to-man coverage on a last second play you know is going to be thrown deep? That is inexcusable for Boston College, but do not let that be seen as any attempt to take anything away from Winston's incredible effort. To spin out of trouble and unload a pass like that with a guy in his face is pretty amazing.
