There’s an old saying that “When it rains, it pours.”
That’s obviously the case at the University of Oregon, where it quite literally rains nearly every day; according to ClimateZone.com the city gets hit with an average of 49 inches of precipitation a year.
However, in terms of the state of the Ducks’ football program, it could also be an appropriate metaphor for the state of Oregon’s current recruiting class. Ducks have seen several of their top commits– including running back Dontre Wilson, wide receiver Darren Carrington and a handful of others- take official visits to other campuses this weekend, and at this point are simply holding on for dear life.
For new head coach Mark Helfrich, there did appear to be a pot of gold at the end of the recruiting rainbow though when he got a surprise visit this weekend from three-star defensive end Davin Bellamy. The former Florida State commit never seemed to be seriously considering the Ducks, with his list of favorites including the Seminoles, as well as Georgia and Tennessee.
Bellamy, did however end up on Oregon’s campus this weekend.
But after having a little “too much” fun at a party, it doesn’t seem like he’ll ever end up as a Duck.
That’s because late Saturday night, Bellamy decided to tweet a picture of himself on the Oregon campus, one which just so happened to prominently display a bong (marijuana smoking device for those less inclined) in front of him. Yup, that's Bellamy in the green jacket. And while Bellamy quickly deleted the picture, it has made its rounds on the internet (we were tipped off to it via The Big Lead), and has the entire college football world buzzing.
Look, at the end of the day we’re not going to blame a high school kid for smoking some weed on a college visit. We’ll save that conversation for another day (that “other” day likely coming “never”). At the same time, it’s hard to imagine Helfrich will bring the kid to campus now, not with all the negative publicity around him and the picture.
Simply put, Bellamy will sign somewhere on Signing Day.
But his chances of going to Oregon just went up in smoke.
