Teams in the Mid-American Conference are known for their high scoring, Tuesday-Friday games, dramatic finishes and not much defense. Last year, Bowling Green made its defense a priority and went to a bowl game for the first time since 2009 because of it. Their defense wasn’t just good for MAC standards, it was in the top 10 nationally, allowing only 16.8 points per game.
Their defensive prowess starts with their pass-rush. The Falcons recorded 38 sacks in 2012, which is tied for 11th nationally.
Bowling Green Sports Information Director Dave Meyer mistakenly volunteered to be the first sack of the 2013 season. Redshirt junior Ted Ouellet, who accounted for 35 tackles and three sacks in 2012, got to do the honors. Meyer got crunched into a foam pad, got the wind knocked out of him, but was fine. Luckily, it was all caught on tape.
This is another chapter in a string of non-football players wanting to be included in the action. Brutus the Buckeye is still icing everything after he participated in a scrimmage earlier this year.
Maybe seeing teams having fun like this is a recruiting tactic. Maybe sacking members of the school administration would flip a kid committed to Northern Illinois into attending Bowling Green. Nevertheless, here’s what Bowling Green’s new recruiting pitch should be:
