Gone from Houston was Kevin Sumlin and the air-raid offense, but Cougars fans had to be shocked that it had completely dissappeard after the Cougars were embarrassed by Texas State 30-13 on Saturday. That lack of offense caused 1st year offensive coordinator Mike Nesbitt to resign his post after just one game.
"We wish Mike the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions to the Houston program," said Head Coach Tony Levine in a statement. "We are confident in Travis [Bush] and his play-calling ability moving forward."
A.k.a. Sorry pal, your offense sucked and don't let the door hit you on the way out there Nesbitt.
Replacing Nesbitt will be Travis Bush, who was Texas-San Antonio's offensive coordinator last year. He also sent time at Texas State as their co-offensive coordinator before taking on his role at UTSA.
How bad were things on Saturday for Houston? Not only could they muster up just 13 points for the game, which was the 2nd lowest point total since 2007, but they only managed to go only 1-13 on 3rd downs.
Oh and QB David Piland was just 17-44 passing for 211 yards. Add in the fact that they had 12 of their 14 possessions go for under two minutes and you can tell the writing was on the wall.
It's one thing if you've got drives like that and you are putting points on the board, but that was about as anemic as you can get.
Nesbitt was the first in-season coaching casualty of the 2012 season, but it's a pretty safe bet he won't be the last either.
