Friday night was a painful loss for Utah in more ways than one apparently, as starting QB Jordan Wynn announced his retirement from football today. This comes on the heels of the 27-20 OT loss to rival Utah State and yet another injury to one of his shoulders.
Wynn, a junior, who was named the 2009 Poinsettia Bowl MVP could never stay healthy following that freshman campaign and has already suffered three shoulder surgeries, two on his right shoulder and another on his non-throwing left shoulder.
The Utes QB was hit hard just after letting go of a pass during Friday night's game and was in immediate pain in his non-throwing shoulder after hitting the ground with just 1:03 left in the first half.
According to head coach Kyle Whittingham the injury was pretty severe and it would most likely require another surgery, making that the fourth in his time as a Ute.
As a result you've got to think the decision to walk away from football is the right one for Wynn's long-term health and future.
Replacing Wynn will be a duo of Jon Hays and Travis Wilson. Hays replaced Wynn on Friday night and played decently, going 12 of 26 for 154 yards and one touchdown, but Wilson also saw limited action against the Aggies. Wilson made it an efficient appearance throwing the ball once for a 28 yard touchdown.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham called the loss of Wynn tough and praised him for his leadership and toughness.
Wynn finishes his Utes career 14-7 as a starter and passed for 4,673 yards with 33 TD's and 17 interceptions.
The Utes must regroup and quick as they tangle with an even bigger rival in BYU this week. It's a Cougars team coming in 2-0 and ranked 25th in the latest AP Poll. So no matter who takes over between Hays and Wilson, they will have their hands full.
