Confession Of A College Football Fan: I Hate National Signing Day

dgb-mizzouSomeone told me yesterday was a huge day for college football.

What, I missed a big game?

Ugggh! It was just National Signing Day.

I guess I’m the rare college football fan who has no interest whatsoever in what happens on the first Wednesday of February every year.

So some physical freak of a wide receiver named Dorial Green-Beckham spurned a bunch of big-time programs to play for Missouri.

Yep, didn’t care.

Now if he’s playing in the fall for Gary Pinkel and actually makes an impact in the SEC, then I’ll care.

Look, I get all of the excitement and speculation that comes with this big day. If your team signs a bunch of 4- and 5-star players then you think the future is set.

But is it really?

OK, LSU and Alabama are loaded with this type of talent and those two played for the BCS National Championship. However, 2011 also included programs like Florida and Notre Dame who had top 10 recruiting classes and the talent didn’t live up to the hype.

In reality, though, there are about 8-10 programs that will get the best recruits every year. So for the remaining 110 programs the day is hyped, but they really know they won’t get any national attention.

So Missouri was this year’s exception, but for all the DGBs there are hundreds more like him that will only consider the elite programs.

Sometimes an elite coach like Steve Spurrier can attract the big-time prospects at a second-tier program, and he has done that at South Carolina by signing the likes of Jadeveon Clowney, Marcus Lattimore, Alshon Jeffery and Stephon Gilmore.

It has also become a huge day on ESPN, web shows, Twitter, etc. If money can be made then someone is going to profit.

I also don’t fault the prep stars for playing into the hype. Whether it’s a huge hat party or someone holding up a live animal, it’s a celebration.

It’s also a big day for the coaches. They are stressed, but also pumped to know who they’ll be coaching in the future. Those guys put in a lot of hard work on the road and the phones putting the class together.

I hope they slept well last night, because it won’t be long until they are on the recruiting trail again … and some recruiting site starts talking about next year’s recruits.

Now do you see why I don’t care?
