Welcome to the Randy Edsall era, a time when Maryland has just as much of a chance at winning the ACC as Duke.
The Terrapins and Blue Devils are each 125-to-1 longshots to win the ACC title and 30-to-1 to win their respective divisions at the popular online sportsbook 5Dimes.com.
Hey, that’s better odds than either Kentucky or Mississippi has at winning the SEC. Both the Wildcats and Rebels are 250-to-1. But the Terrapins’ long odds are a good gauge at what’s going on in College Park these days.
Things are obviously a bit more cheerful in Tallahassee, where Florida State is the clear-cut favorite to win the ACC title game in Charlotte in December. The Seminoles are around 7-to-5 favorites and have similar odds to what Oklahoma has of winning the Big 12.
Virginia Tech (+300) is second in oddsmakers’ eyes, but only because the Hokies are expected to represent the Coastal Division in the conference title game. Clemson (+550) is the second-best team in most oddsmakers’ eyes. North Carolina—Phil Steele’s pick to win the Coastal Division–is 15-to-1 to win the conference.
