Prior to the Texas A&M Aggies’ game against the Texas Longhorns last week, coach Mike Sherman got the oft-dreaded vote of confidence from Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin.
”As far as I’m concerned, yes. We don’t want to make any hasty moves, and we look forward to [Sherman] being our football coach in the future.”
Following the Thanksgiving Day disaster that saw A&M, again, falter down the stretch, losing in the final – for now – Texas-Texas A&M game 27-25, a different tone is now emanating from College Station.
“I’ve been talking to [athletic director] Bill Byrne for the last couple weeks,” Loftin said Tuesday. “We’re thinking hard about [the season and the future].”
The writing seems to be on the wall.
According to Football Rumor Mill:
“Multiple sources tell FRM TX A&M will fire Mike Sherman, barring any last minute change of heart.”
Sherman in four seasons at A&M has compiled a 25-25 overall record. This season was supposed to be different for the Aggies, who had high hopes following a 2010 season that saw A&M finish winning nine games and a Big 12 South Division co-championship. Texas A&M entered 2011 with 18 returning starters, ranked in the top 10 and a Big 12 Championship on its mind; maybe more.
Sherman, who replaced Dennis Franchione after the 2007 season, brought an NFL-pedigree with him to College Station. More success was expected.
Next season, A&M will move on to the SEC.
It appears Mike Sherman will be left behind.
