Bloguin Heisman Poll Week Five

Week five of the College Football Season has come and gone. Russell Wilson and the Wisconsin Badgers beat up on the Cornhuskers of Nebraska, Alabama flexed it’s muscle against the Gators, and Stephen Garcia might have single-handedly put the kibosh on Marcus Lattimore’s Heisman hopes. Last week was week four of the Bloguin Heisman Poll as RG3 took hold of the number one spot on the poll. Did he hold his lead this week or did somebody else step up to take the leaders hat?

1) Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 25 Points, 26.04%, 7 1st Place Votes

Last Week: 23/27, 227 yds, 3 TD, 0 INT, 1 reception

Season: 80/112 (71.4%), 1013 yards, 11 TDs, 1 INT, 1 rushing TD, 1 reception

This Week: Colorado

* Luck seems like he is in cruise control out there. Part of it is his overall skill set and part of it is the Pac 12 will come down to Stanford and Oregon. He will need a win over the Ducks to try and separate him from the other candidates, and the next few weeks should give him that opportunity to pad his stats before the big showdown.

* The highlight-real performances that showcased some candidates in the early season games are less likely now to affect the final outcome. The preseason favorite continues put up good stats weekly. He’s on a steady course to earn the stiff-arm trophy December 10.

– Pete Sonski, College Football Zealots

* The preseason favorite may not have outlandish numbers but that is partly because Stanford has not needed him to play a complete game this season. The Cardinal have blown out each of their opponents, taking the need to utilize Luck to the full potential at a bare minimum. Still, Luck has over 1,000 passing yards and 11 touchdowns after just four games. I’m looking for Luck to put up some solid numbers this weekend against Colorado. November 12 (Oregon) can’t get here soon enough for me.

Season: 83/111 (74%), 1391 yds, 13 TD, 1 INT, 140 yds rushing, 2 rushing TD

This Week: Idle

* I mean, did you see Saturday’s game? The guy is simply perfect. I don’t have a daughter (nor do I want one), but if I did, I’d want her to date Russell Wilson.

* He passed his first big test against Nebraska at Camp Randall with flying colors. What was Tom O’Brien thinking at North Carolina State for letting Wilson get away?

– Tom Perry, Eye and Eer

* Wilson had the national spotlight Saturday night, and showed that his early season numbers were no fluke. He was 14-20, 255 yards, 2 TDs and he ran for a score. Wilson made accurate down the field throws to torch the Nebraska secondary. Wisconsin looks like one of the elite teams in the nation, and a big part of it is because of Wilson. If he keeps up putting numbers on the Big 10, he has to be one of the front runners.

3) Robert Griffin III (QB-Baylor) – 10 Points, 10.42%, 1 1st Place Vote

Season: 93/113 (82.3%), 1308 yards, 18TD, 1 INT; 173 rush, 1 Rush TD, 1 Rec

This Week: Iowa State

* Speaking of perfect, Griffin finally proved that he isn’t quite, with a late game pick against Kansas State. Whatever, 18 touchdowns and 1 INT? Not to mention an 82 percent completion percentage? I’ll take that any day of the week

4) Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 6.5 Points, 6.77%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last week: 19/33, 142 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT

Season: 102/138 (73.9%), 1137 yards, 14 TD, 4 INT

This Week: at Fresno State

* Moore didn’t have his best night. He did do what he does best, though, which is win football games. The Broncos exacted revenge on Nevada for last season’s nightmare, and once again led by Moore, appear headed for an undefeated season.

5) Trent Richardson (RB- Alabama)- 6 Points, 6.25%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last Week: 29 rushes, 181 yards, 2 TD, 2 receptions

Season: 96 rushes, 622 yards, 10 TD, 6.48 ypc, 11 receptions, 1 rec TD

This Week: vs Vanderbilt

* TR may not have started out hot but boy has he shown up in Bama’s two toughest games. He put up 7.41 ypc against Arkansas and delivered the goods against Will Muschamp and the Gators with 181 yards on the ground and 2 TDs. He only had 37 yards rushing in his first game of the season but is still the 4th leading rusher in the NCAA. Out of that top four he has the best ypc and has the most TDs.

Season: 124 rushes, 677 yds, 9 TD, 5.46 ypc, 152 rush ypg, 12 rec, 1 TD

This Week: vs Kentucky

* Considering how ineffective South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia has been so far, opponents will key on stopping Lattimore. The sophomore tailback had his first pedestrian performance of the season last week against Auburn in the Gamecocks first loss. Kentucky this week will learn whether his meager 66 yards and 1 TD were a fluke.

6T) Tyrann Mathieu (CB-LSU)- 4 Points, 4.17%, 0 1st Place Votes

Tyrann_Mathieu

* Tyrann Mathieu might not be the nation’s best defensive player at a specific position but he is Mr. Everything for this suffocating LSU defense. The 5’9″ sophomore leads the Bayou Bengals in tackles, returns punts, has an interception, 1.5 sacks, 4 passes defensed and has 3 fumbles recovered, 2 of which he’s returned for touchdowns. He plays bigger than his frame and even as the smallest guy on the field he is the biggest playmaker the Tigers have on either side of the ball.

Poll Notes

– It’s amazing what a big win can do for a Heisman campaign. Russell Wilson went from 5th place and 9.38% of the vote all the way up to 2nd place and 25% of the vote. In fact, if it wasn’t for a late ballot from an unnamed blogger he would have been #1.

– On the other hand, a loss is not so good for your Heisman chances. RG3 lost 6 first place votes and 19.79% of the vote after Baylor fell to Kansas State on Saturday.

– In his off week Andrew Luck only lost 4.9% of his votes and 1 first place vote. After playing UCLA, Luck gained 3 first place votes and 9.37% of the vote.

– This week just half a point separte the #1 (Luck) and #2 (Wilson) vote getters. Before this week the closest vote was week three where 4 points separated the leader Marcus Lattimore and the runner-up Andrew Luck.

– The last Stanford Cardinal to win the Heisman Trophy? Jim Plunkett in 1970.

– This week Andrew Luck takes on the Colorado Buffaloes. Despite being 1-4, the Buffs do have the #2 passing defense in the Pac-12 giving up 222 yards per game (of course, that would rank them 12th in the SEC in that metric).

– RG3 looks to rebound this week against Steele Jantz and the Cylcones of Iowa State. Iowa State (3-1) is coming off of their first loss of the season and boasts the 5th ranked passing defense in the Big 12 (giving up 218.5 yards per game).

– Kellen Moore travels to California to beat up on a Fresno State team that just lost to Houston Nutt and Ole Miss.

– Trent Richardson takes on Vandy this week. I know it sounds easy but they held Marcus Lattimore to just 77 yards and on the season they are giving up just 97 yards per game on the ground.

-Marcus Lattimore is licking his chops this week as they play SEC cellar dweller Kentucky. Kentucky is 11th in the SEC in rushing defense giving up 198 yards per game. That number is a little inflated as Florida gained an eye-popping 405 yards against them.

– Last but not least Tyrann Mathieu and the LSU Tigers take on the Florida Gators this week without John Brantley. Seems like Mathieu is primed for a big game.

Sammy Watkins has been epic for the Clemson Tigers and while he doesn’t boast the 100+ yard per game average of Robert Woods the freshman does have six touchdowns and has been Clemson’s biggest playmaker. The kid is electrifying and has helped lead the Tigers to wins over Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech including 10 catches to sink the defending national champs.
