Bloguin Heisman Poll Week Twelve

The last few weeks of this season have been absolutely crazy and have caused a chaos at the top of the polls. Oklahoma State was in the drivers seat to get a bid to the BCS National Championship Game but they got upended by Iowa State in Ames. Just when Oregon started to get back into the race, they got beat by USC and Matt Barkley. Finally, Robert Griffin III stepped up and had a “Heisman Moment” in Baylor’s shocking upset of Oklahoma. In a college football world where few have made individual Heisman statements on the field, how would RG3’s statement affect his standing in the poll? Would he be able to make a run at the top spot or would Andrew Luck continue to get the support of our voters?

Here is what you’ll see each week in the Bloguin Heisman Poll:

1) Robert Griffin III (QB-Baylor)- 29 Points, 32.22%, 8 1st Place Votes

Last Week: 21/34 for 479 yds, 4 TD, 0 INT, 72 yards rushing

Season: 245/336 for 3572 yds (72.9%), 33 TD, 5 INT, 550 yds rushing, 5 rushing TD, 1 rec

This Week: Texas Tech (5-6 Overall, 2-6 in Big 12)

* This has been the most difficult ballot to fill out in the last 2 years of our Heisman Poll. So, let’s keep it simple and identify the most outstanding player in college football. Not the best QB, or the best player on the best team. The most outstanding player from the beginning of the season has been RG3, period.

* If this award really is about the most “valuable” college football player, than Saturday proved beyond a reasonable doubt that no one is more “valuable” to their team than RGIII. His 551 yards of total offense is more than any other team total against Oklahoma this year, with the exception of Texas Tech. Un…real…

* In continuing my what have you done for me lately theme, RGIII vaults from nowheresville USA in my ballot to the top after a stellar performance in an upset win over Oklahoma. RGIII was 21-of-34 for 479 yards and four touchdown passes. He also ran for 72 yards on 18 carries. With all of the upsets going on in college football right now, there is no clear cut favorite which might allow RG III or even another player to steal the Heisman away from everybody’s preseason and most of the season favorite Andrew Luck.

2) Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 18 Points, 20.00%, 4 1st Place Votes

Last Week BHP Ranking: #1

Last Week: 20/30, 257 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT

Season: 241/343 (70.3%), 2937 yards, 31 TDs, 8 INT, 2 rush TD, 1 reception

This Week: vs Notre Dame (8-3 Overall)

* Luck responded this week by leading the Cardinal to a close victory over rival California. Maybe he has received way too much hype and everyone is looking for a reason to bring him down, but Luck is still the best player in the nation and has earned the Heisman.

– Tom Perry, Eye and Eer

* Luck is fortunate that the Heisman race has widened again as the season draws to a close. He remains the front runner among a number of very good (but no outstanding) candidates. His game against Cal was better than the previous one against Oregon, but he is not playing at his peak and could be eclipsed this week.

– Pete Sonski, College Football Zealots

* Luck did what he had to do early and Stanford’s D did what they do late: let teams back in it. So Luck uses the Cardinal’s only possession of the 4th to engineer a 14 play 57 yard drive for what is now the game winning field goal and ate up half the quarter. No reason to drop him this week. ND should give Stanford a good shot this week.

3) Trent Richardson (RB-Alabama) – 15 Points, 16.67%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last Week: 32 carries for 175 yards, 2 TD, 2 reception, 1 rec TD

Season: 236 carries for 1380 yds, 5.85 ypc, 20 TD, 26 receptions, 2 rec TD

This Week: at #24 Auburn (7-4 Overall, 4-3 in SEC)

* Richardson’s 22 total scores are nine more than Mark Ingram had in 2009, and if he wins, his total would be the most by a Heisman-winning running back since Ricky Williams’ 28 in 1998.

4) Case Keenum (QB-Houston)- 12.5 Points, 13.89%, 0 1st Place Votes

Last Week BHP Ranking: #4

Last Week: 30/45 for 318 yds, 1 Passing TD, 0 INT, 1 Rushing TD

Season: 309/421 for 4269 yds (73.4%), 38 Passing TD, 3 Rushing TD, 3 INT

This Week: at Tulsa (8-3 Overall, 7-0 in C-USA)

* Ungodly numbers, but sadly for Keenum he won’t get national respect with his current level of competition.

– Matt Yoder, Awful Announcing

* In a year lacking of Heisman Moments (other than RG3 dagger to the Sooners last week), Keenum deserves as much or more consideration as Andrew Luck and the other usual suspects in contention. Keenum has a couple of tough games left against Tulsa and (probably) Southern Miss. He still has a chance to make a better Case for the Heisman.

5) Montee Ball (RB-Wisconsin) – 7.5 Points, 8.33%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last Week BHP Ranking: #8

Last Week: 38 carries for 224 yards, 2 TD, 2 reception, 1 rec TD

Season: 223 carries for 1466 yds, 6.57 ypc, 25 TD, 16 receptions, 5 rec TD

This Week: at #19 Penn State (9-2 Overall, 6-1 in Big Ten)

* Montee Ball has been stellar individually, with 1466 yards rushing and 30 total touchdowns. Ball’s a workhorse who simply can’t be denied the end zone, and he’s likely to get two marquee games and may carry his team to a trip to the Rose Bowl. If he does, the Trophy’s his.

Poll Notes

– For the first time in eight weeks someone other than Andrew Luck has their name at the #1 spot of our poll. For the third time this year, Robert Griffin III is in the drivers seat of the Bloguin Heisman Poll.

– RG3 or Andrew Luck have been #1 in our poll for 11 out of 12 weeks. Can you guess the only other player to be on top of the poll this year? I don’t think you can…

– Andrew Luck’s supporters have been very consistent. He only lost two points this week and kept all four of his first place votes from last week.

– RG3’s rise in the polls came at the expense of Brandon Weeden. Weeden went from 20 points to 0 and RG3 from 5 to 29. See any correlation there?

– Trent Richardson placed on more overall ballots than Andrew Luck. The difference was Luck’s four first place votes to Richardson’s one.

– RG3 is licking his chops this week as Baylor takes on Texas Tech. Tech is actually 2nd in the Big 12 in passing defense giving up 224 yards per game. Don’t let those numbers fool you as Tech sports the worst rushing defense in the Big 12. If teams can run right through you, why pass the ball? The only team worse than Texas Tech in terms of total yardage given up in the Big 12? Kansas.

– Andrew Luck and the Cardinal take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame this week. Notre Dame ranks 31st Nationally in Pass Defense giving up 198 yards per game. The Irish have given up 17 TD through the air which ranks them 65th in the Nation.

– It rivalry week in the SEC and Alabama takes on Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Auburn is 10th in the SEC in rushing defense giving up 193 yards per game on the ground.

– Case Keenum and Houston take on a good Tulsa team that’s only losses this year have come against Top 25 opponents that were ranked in the Top 10 at the time of defeat. Tulsa is giving up 272 yards per game through the air but has a conference best 16 INT on the year.

– Montee Ball and Wisconsin will be tested this week as they play against a very good Penn State defense. The Nittany Lions are third in the Big Ten giving up just 127 yards per game on the ground.

– What fringe candidate should you watch out for this week? How bout Matt Barkley of USC. They take on cross town rivals UCLA in their final game of the season. This is Barkley’s last chance to make a statement that he should be considered for the Heisman.
