Bloguin Heisman Poll Week Ten

The “Game of the Year of the Century” came and went with mixed reviews but one thing was for sure, fans watched. The game gave CBS it’s best rating for college football since 1989 as LSU topped the Crimson Tide by a score of 9 to 6. Heisman Candidate Trent Richardson accounted for more than half of Bama’s total yardage as he was their leading rusher and receiver but would it be enough for him to stay with the pack as we’ve seen RG3 and Russell Wilson fall recently after losses.

1) Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 36 Points, 40.00%, 10 1st Place Votes

Last Week BHP Ranking: #1

Last Week: 20/30, 206 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT, 28 yds rushing

Season: 194/272 (71.3%), 2424 yards, 26 TDs, 5 INT, 2 rush TD, 1 reception

This Week: vs #7 Oregon (8-1 Overall, 6-0 in Pac-12)

* There is no Heisman trophy race this year. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck has lost just one game in two years while completing 70% of his passes with 58 touchdowns. Alabama and LSU have no single player that is so dominant. Boise State’s Kellen Moore plays a puny schedule. Luck is the most outstanding player in college football, the sure number one pick in next spring’s draft, and a great representative of what the sport should be. He passed up big bucks in the NFL to finish his degree and play another year with his teammates, showing uncommon wisdom and grace to go along with phenomenal leadership skills. He’s probably the best representative of the Heisman ideal to come along in a long while.

* Seeing as how Trent Richardson really didn’t do enough to pass Luck, he still gets the #1 spot by default. As Bruce Feldman told us last week, without Luck Stanford is an unranked team. The Oregon game can make or break his candidacy.

– Matt Yoder, Awful Announcing

* Luck didn’t have the flashiest game against Oregon State, but he did connect for TDs. He’s up to 26 TDs against 5 INTs for the season, while hitting 71% of his passes. Luck will get another chance for a Heisman moment this weekend in prime time. If Stanford makes it past that one, the path for the Heisman could be clear for Luck.

2) Case Keenum (QB-Houston)- 15 Points, 16.67%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last Week: 39/44 for 407 yds, 2 Passing TD, 2 Rushing TD, 0 INT

Season: 257/347 for 3626 yds (74.1%), 34 Passing TD, 2 Rushing TD 3 INT

This Week: at Tulane (2-8 Overall, 1-5 in C-USA)

* I’ve got to be real, I don’t think there’s a player doing more for his team than Keenum is right now. It’s one thing to lead the country in passing yards and touchdowns (which is what he’s doing) when you’re throwing the ball more than anyone else, but he’s only fifth in the country in total passes. I never thought I’d see the day where I’d have him here, but I can’t find anyone else more deserving.

* I had Keenum at the top of my list to start the season. It may have been a bit facetious then, but now it’s real. He’s putting up the numbers, and deserves the consideration.

* If you want stats, well Keenum has it. If you want a winning team, well he has that too. Now all he needs is some media hype. Come on, hard to argure Keenum when he has 17,212 passing yards for his career and has led Houston to its first 9-0 start.

3) Trent Richardson (RB-Alabama) – 14 Points, 15.56%, 0 1st Place Votes

Last Week: 23 carries for 89 yards, 5 receptions for 80 yards

Season: 172 carries for 1078 yds, 6.27 ypc, 17 TD, 23 receptions, 1 rec TD

This Week: at Mississippi State (5-4 Overall, 1-4 in SEC)

* In his signature game, Richardson had 169 yards of Alabama’s 295 yards of offense. He put Alabama in positions to win the game with field goals, or at least put them up. He did a lot, but he didn’t do enough to win the game. And when you are talking about someone responsible for more than 50% of your offense and he does not directly give you any points, it is hard to say he would jump Luck after that performance.

* I’ve been leading the Trent Richarson bangwagon since all the way back in five and this was the biggest week in Trent’s Heisman campaign. Unfortunately for him and Bama they came up short. Trent was “the” offense for Bama in this game and he falls a bit for not being able to put his team over the top I can’t help but feel he was a little held back by the play calling and his teammates.

4) Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 11 Points, 12.22%, 1 1st Place Vote

* Coming up with a clear-cut No. 1 at this point is impossible, but I’m still going with Moore. For an award that I think should reflect the role your play has had in helping your team win games, I’ll take Moore.

– Allen Kenney, Blatant Homerism

* Moore has turned into the Loch Ness Monster of college football; because of the Mountain West’s TV deal, nobody sees him play anymore. Well, in 2011 he’s just as good as ever before, with less help.

This Week: at Texas Tech (5-4 Overall, 2-4 in Big 12)

* Brandon Weeden is slowly starting to get the recognition he has deserved all season as the Oklahoma State Cowboys’ QB extraordinaire. With 3,212 passing yards, Weeden is poised, polished and ready to perform. He makes us glad we bet a few on OSU to be national champs when Vegas was giving 30-1 odds back in August.

* It’s not Brandon Weeden’s fault that the Cowboys defense can’t stop Kansas State’s offense. Weeden would also become the oldest winner since Chris Weinke won it at the age of 42.

Poll Notes

– The big movers this week in the poll were Trent Richardson and Case Keenum. Richardson moved down 13.77% after his teams loss and Keenum jumped from 5th to 2nd with a 11.34% gain.

– I know I sound like a broken record, I know I sound like a broken record, but Andrew Luck was once again at the top of our poll for the sixth consecutive week. He’s been in the Top 3 in every poll and he’s now been #1 in seven out of our ten polls.

– Andrew Luck and Stanford face their toughest test of the season this week as they host the Ducks of Oregon. Oregon is 3rd in the Pac-12 in Passing Defense giving up 234.6 yards per game (which ranks them 71st in the Nation). On the year the Oregon defense has only given up 11 TDs through the air (versus 10 INT).

– Case Keenum and his undefeated Cougars take on Tulane this week. Tulane is ranked 63rd Nationally in pass defense as they give up 227 yards per game and have given up 14 TD versus 10 INT.

– Trent Richardson and Alabama try to rebound as they play Dan Mullen and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs are 8th in the SEC in run defense giving up 161.22 yards per game. They give up 3.89 yards per carry which ranks them 52nd in the Nation.

– Kellen Moore and the Broncos of Boise State face one of their two toughest games of the year as they host the TCU Horned Frogs. TCU is 5th in the MWC giving up 225.2 yards passing per game. They got torched by RG3 in week one as they gave up 414 yards and 6 TD and in their other loss to SMU they gave up 349 yards passing and 4 passing TD.

– Brandon Weedon faces the #1 passing defense in the Big 12 in Texas Tech as they give up 204.2 yards per game. Sometimes stats can be deceiving. Tech is so good against the pass because they can’t stop the run (9th in the Conference at 249 yards given up per game).

– If you are looking for someone to keep an eye on this week then turn your attention to Thursday night and Virginia Tech against Georgia Tech. David Wilson is quietly the second leading rushing in the FBS (13 yards behind San Diego State’s Ronnie Hillman). This is a big spotlight game for Wilson and it’s huge for the Hokies shot at the ACC. Georgia Tech is also not great against the run as they gave up 246 yards on the ground in a 5 point win against Maryland and gave up 272 in an upset loss to Virginia.
