Bloguin Heisman Poll Week Nine

bloguinheisman

If you thought last week was crazy with the finish to Wisconsin and Michigan State, this week was just as wild. Oklahoma State and Brandon Weedon curb stomped the Heisman campaign of RG3, Georgia Tech shocked Clemson, Georgia got the monkey of it’s back in Jacksonville, South Caroina survived it’s first full game without Marcus Lattimore, for the second straight week Wisconsin got beat in spectacular fashion, Oklahoma rebounded by taking Billy Snyder to the woodshed, and in the finale Stanford and Andrew Luck outlasted Lane Kiffin and the USC Trojans in triple OT. Heisman dreams were put on hold this week in the case of RG3 and Russell Wilson. Who would benefit from their fall from the poll?

Here is what you’ll see each week in the Bloguin Heisman Poll:

Without any further adieu, the Bloguin Heisman Poll…

1) Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 32 Points, 42.67%, 10 1st Place Votes

Last Week BHP Ranking: #1

Last Week: 29/40, 330 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT, 36 yds rushing, 1 rush TD

Season: 174/242 (71.9%), 2218 yards, 23 TDs, 4 INT, 2 rush TD, 1 reception

This Week: at Oregon State (2-6)

* Was he perfect in the win over USC? Not by a long shot, but these are the type of games that Heisman Trophies are won. If Luck can work some magic again and get past Oregon, it’s hard to see how he won’t win the award.

– Tom Perry, Eye and Eer

* Threw an AWFUL pick 6 down the stretch against the Trojans, but managed to get the job done in overtime and win a tough road test.  As long as Luck keeps Stanford unbeaten, no way he slips from #1.

– Matt Yoder, Awful Announcing

* With Richardson and Moore on a bye week, it was Andrew Luck’s stage on Saturday night. And he didn’t disappoint. I know most people will point to the late pick-6 as a fatal flaw, but it actually strengthened his case to be the Heisman front runner. He promptly lead his team down the field for the tying touchdown. And in overtime when they needed touchdowns, he lead Stanford to 3 touchdowns, including a 2 point conversion in the 3rd OT. That kind of resiliency is what embodies a Heisman winner.

– Hamilton Riley, Lambeth Field

2) Trent Richardson (RB-Alabama) – 22 Points, 29.33%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last Week BHP Ranking: #2

Last Week: Idle

Season: 149 carries for 989 yds, 6.64 ypc, 17 TD, 18 receptions, 1 rec TD

This Week: vs LSU (8-0)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=rLQOKjH_S3I

* I’ve been leading the Trent Richarson bangwagon since all the way back in five. This week will be the deciding factor in Richardson’s Heisman Candiacy. If Bama wins and TR has a big game it’s going to be neck and neck with him and Luck down the stretch. No pressure, right?

– Kevin, College Football Zealots

* It’s really a one game season for Trent Richardson’s Heisman hopes.  If he has any numbers to speak of (100 yards and a TD would do) against the #1 team in the country, Richardson could finally get the national buzz he deserves.  It doesn’t hurt that Richardson will have the national stage in the latest Game of the Century.

– Ryan Yoder, Awful Announcing

* Richardson is coming off a bye, but man oh man does he have the chance to make a statement this week. Richardson is 7th in the nation in rushing, and 3rd in rushing TDs. If Richardson has a monster game against LSU Saturday night, he’s going to spring to the top of a lot of lists.

– Scott, Bearcats Blog

3) Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 7 Points, 9.33%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last Week BHP Ranking: #3

Last week: Idle

Season: 174/228 (76.3%), 2010 yards, 24 TD, 5 INT

This Week: at UNLV 2-5

* Nothing new to report on an off week. Moore remains very good.

– Allen Kenney, Blatant Homerism

* Moore is the Energizer bunny, he just keeps going and going.  He has a chance to pass Colt McCoy for most career wins.  If the top 2 falter, Moore could wrap up the Heisman as a default lifetime achievement award.

– Ryan Yoder, Awful Announcing

4) Brandon Weedon (QB-Oklahoma State)- 6 Points, 8.00%, 0 1st Place Votes

Last Week BHP Ranking: #6 (Tied)

Last Week: 24/36 for 274 yds, 3 TD, 0 INT

Season: 246/345 for 2710 yds (71.3%), 22 TD, 7 INT

This Week: vs Kansas State (7-1)

* Brandon Weeden has been racking up passing yardage and killing defensive secondaries all season. His 2,710 yards passing makes him the most prolific QB amongst the Top 5 teams in the country and he’s the main reason Oklahoma State continues to deliver an undefeated season to the growing army of ‘Pokes’ fans.

– Jamie Gilkey, Suns Stuff’t

* How is Brandon Weeden not in the Heisman discussion more? His team is 8-0 and a big reason for that is his strong, right arm. Would someone please give Weeden some love?

– Tom Perry, Eye and Eer

5) Case Keenum (QB-Houston)- 4 Points, 5.33%, 0 1st Place Votes

Last Week BHP Ranking: #7

Last Week: 24/37 for 534 yds, 9 TD, 1 INT

Season: 218/303 for 3219 yds (71.9%), 32 TD, 3 INT

This Week: at UAB (1-7)

* Keenum’s numbers are too good to ignore.  He is completing 71.9% of his passes and has thrown 32 touchdowns and just three interceptions.  Perhaps more importantly, Houston is undefeated and ranked 13th in the BCS standings.

– Kris Brauner, Saturday Night Slant

* How can you not rate this guy highly in the mix of Heisman contenders as his passing numbers make you shake your head.  He has over 3200 yards passing, 32 TDs and a 71% completion rate with just 3 INTS.  Oh and his team is 8-0 for the season.

– Ritch, Leftover Hot Dog

Also Receiving Votes: Ryan Broyles (QB- Oklahoma) 3 pts, David Wilson (RB- Virginia Tech) 1 pt

Dropped Out:  Robert Woods (WR- USC), Russell Wilson (QB- Wisconsin), Sammy Watkins (WR- Clemson), Tahj Boyd (QB- Clemson)

New to the Poll: None

Returning to the Poll: None

Poll Notes

Only seven players received votes this week which was the least amount of players to recieve votes since we started the poll. Maybe it was because we were a few voters down this week due to the storms in the Northeast (hopefully all is going well with those guys) or maybe it was Luck and Richardson emerging as the leading candidates.

– This week saw the exit of two Heisman candidates who had been near the top all year long, Russell Wilson and RG3. In this day and age, you have to win football games to have a shot at the Heisman. Clemson’s loss also took out two fringe candidates in Sammy Watkins and Tajh Boyd.

– Mr Consistency Andrew Luck stayed at the top of our poll for the fifth consecutive poll. He’s been in the Top 3 in every poll we’ve done and he’s now been #1 in six out of our nine polls. Despite being down a few voters this week he still gained a first place vote (and increased his vote share from 33% to 42%).

– Trent Richardson had an off week but because of the amount of exits from the poll this week he added 3.14% to his vote total.

– Andrew Luck and Stanford have started to reach the tough part of their schedule but this week shouldn’t be tough as they face a struggling Oregon State team. Despite having won just two games, the Beavers actually rank second in the Pac-12 in pass defense giving up 222.3 yards per game.

– Trent Richardson and Alabama play in the “Game of the Year of the Century” this week against LSU. LSU is #2 in the SEC, behind Bama, in rushing defense giving up just 76.63 yards per game. If you are keeping track at home that’s #3 in the Nation against the run.

– Kellen Moore and the Broncos of Boise State continue to move through the MWC this week like a knife through hot butter as they face the UNLV Rebels. UNLV is 100th against the pass in the Nation and shouldn’t provide much resistance for Moore.

– Brandon Weedon moved all the way up to 4th this week and faces off against the one loss Wildcats of Kansas State who will be looking to right their ship after getting sunk by the Sooners last week. Despite having only one loss the Wildcats rank 103rd in the Nation against the pass giving up 277.9 yards per game. Oklahoma threw for 520 on them last week.

– Another newcomer to the top five, Case Keenum, faces off against UAB and they also rank in the bottom 20 of all FBS teams in passing defense (#108). The least amount of passing yards UAB has given up this year was 212 to both Florida and Mississippi State (both teams ran for over 200 yards against the Blazers).
