Bloguin Heisman Poll Week Seven

Week seven of the College Football Season has come and gone. Virginia Tech woke up, Oklahoma State continued to impress, LSU remained dominant, Clemson kept themselves from pulling a Clemson, Stanford remained unbeaten but Michigan did not. In Heisman news, the very talented South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore was the first Heisman casualty as he suffered an unfortunate season ending injury in the Gamecocks win over Mississippi State. Last week was week six of the Bloguin Heisman Poll as Andrew Luck remained in the top spot for the second straight week. Could he hold onto his spot or would a certain ACC transfer or SEC RB take his crown?

1) Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 25 Points, 27.78%, 7 1st Place Votes

Last Week: 23/36, 336 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT

Season: 129/181 (71.3%), 1719 yards, 18 TDs, 3 INT, 1 rushing TD, 1 reception

* Is there anyone else on top? Another stellar performance in PAC 12 play is moving Luck closer to a big matchup with Oregon. But first he must get by an upstart Washington team this weekend, but if his 6/1 TD-to-INT ratio is any indication, it will be a short day for the Huskies.

* Andrew Luck is that type of quarterback — that type of football player — that is a notch above even the very best that play the game. He’ll scoop up the Heisman and several more honors on his way to being the #1 pick in the draft.

* Luck remains the favorite for me. He got off to a slow start but still finished with 336 yards and four touchdowns. He may need to step up his numbers as Russell Wilson is on his tail.

2) Russell Wilson (QB-Wisconsin) – 23 Points, 25.56%, 2 1st Place Votes

Season: 95/128 (74.2%), 1557 yds, 14 TD, 1 INT, 182 yds rushing, 2 rushing TD, 1 rec, 1 rec TD

This Week: at Michigan State (5-1)

* Maybe he’s just such a great story that many college fans want to see him win the award. Or maybe we just want to see Tom O’Brien regret kicking him off the North Carolina State campus.

* Wilson’s numbers were not great on Saturday, but they did not need to be. Against an under-matched Indiana team, Wisconsin kept things on the ground. Wilson did catch a touchdown pass on a trick play, which is sure to be on his Heisman highlight reel. Over the first half of this season, not many can claim to have been more outstanding than Russell Wilson.

* Wilson did not light up the stat sheet against Indiana but that is more because he was not needed to have a full work load against the hapless Hoosiers (but keep in mind Wisconsin put up 50+ points against a team Penn State struggled with for four quarters). Wilson threw one touchdown pass and caught another in the latest attempt to get a quarterback some Heisman footage to chew on for the voters. It happens every year. I’m sure we’ll see Moore catch a pass before the end of the season too.

3) Trent Richardson (RB-Alabama) – 18 Points, 20.00%, 3 1st Place Votes

Last Week: 17 carries for 183 yds, 10.76 ypc, 4 TD, 2 receptions

Season: 132 carries for 912 yds, 6.91 ypc, 15 TD, 15 receptions, 1 rec TD

* I would like to welcome my fellow Trent Richardson voters aboard the bandwagon. I’ve had TR #1 for the last three weeks after he bullied the Florida defensive line. The best thing he did last week against Ole Miss was he had the “Heisman Moment” highlight where he broke the poor Ole Miss defenders ankles. Not only is Trent the most worthy candidate right now but now he has something on video that will make the voters remember him. If Bama win the SEC Title, he wins the Heisman.

* I swear, if I log-in to look at this poll on Wednesday and see that Andrew Luck is still No. 1, I’m either going to inflict pain on someone, or stop voting. Because for anyone who has Luck ahead of Richardson right now either simply isn’t watching the games, or is a fool. He’s second in the country in rushing (952), and has six straight 100-yard rushing games (an Alabama record), despite the fact that he rarely plays much into the fourth quarter. Incredibly, I think he means more to this particular Alabama team than Mark Ingram did in 2009.

* Ignoring Trent Richardson this long has been a big mistake by this voter, especially one who was on the Mark Ingram for Heisman bandwagon from the start of his 2009 campaign. As pointed out by many, Richardson is beating many of Ingram’s stats at the same point in his Heisman season, and after his sensational run against Ole Miss, Richardson has a highlight reel play to draw attention.

4) Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 8 Points, 8.89%, 1 1st Place Vote

* Moore moves back to the top spot after Denard Robinson bit the big one against michigan state. Boise just keeps destroying people, and I think Moore is the biggest reason for that.

* He didn’t have much of a game statistically Saturday but I have a hard time taking him off right now because of his impact. Yes he only had one tackle and didn’t get an interception against Tennessee BUT what the young man has now done is open up the entire LSU secondary for feasting. Teams are so concerned with throwing the ball away from the Honey Badger they are tossing interceptions to his teammates.

Poll Notes

– Last week we noted the consistency of Andrew Luck. This continued this week as he remained in the top spot for the third consecutive week. He’s been in the Top 3 in every poll we’ve done and he’s now been #1 in four out of the seven polls. This week Luck gained 1 first place vote but he lost 2.43% of his overall points.

– Russell Wilson came in second place and lost a first place votes but placed on more ballots and gained 5.77% in the poll. He also cut Andrew Luck’s lead to just 2.22%. That’s the second closest margin we’ve had so far (the other was week five when just 0.52% separated Luck and Wilson).

– The big gainer this week was Trent Richardson as he added two more first place votes to his resume and gained 15.83% in the polls as he moved from 7th to 3rd place.

– The big faller was Robert Griffin III as his team fell to Texas A&M and collected their second loss of the season. Griffin has gone from 1st place in week four to 3rd place in week five to 4th place in week six to six place in this weeks poll. Is this the last we’ve seen of RG3 in the Heisman Race?

– Andrew Luck and Stanford face their toughest test to date as they play their first Top 25 team of the year in Washington. That being said, Washington is dead last in the Pac-12 in Pass Defense as they give up 303.7 yards per game. The only two teams they’ve played that haven’t put up 300 yds passing on them have been Nebraska and Colorado.

– Russell Wilson and Wisconsin passed their first test earlier this month when they pounded Nebraska. Now they face Michigan State in a tough road test this weekend. Michigan State is #1 in the Nation in Passing Defense giving up just 119,2 yds/game and they are also #1 in the Big Ten (#2 in the Nation behind Bama) in Total Defense giving up 186.2 yds/game.

– Trent Richardson and the Crimson Tide host Tennesse this week. The Vols are fresh off losses to LSU and Georgia and rank 8th in the SEC in stopping the run (159 yds/game). Last week LSU gained 260 yds on the ground against them.

– Kellen Moore takes on Air Force this weekend. Air Force is 4th in the MWC giving up 205 yds/game. Remember this is an Air Force team that gave up 59 points to Notre Dame including 4 passing TDs.

– The Honey Badger takes on the Auburn Tigers who will be starting a new QB this week, Clint Moseley. I think it’s a pretty safe bet that the Honey Badger takes what he wants in this one.

FINAL THOUGHT from Michael Felder: “My God A Freshman”

Sammy Watkins (WR/Clemson): The freshman gets the top spot for me this weekend after his “Put The Team On His Back” performance against the Terps. I don’t care that it was just Maryland, the fact is this kid did everything for the Tigers to not only get them back into the game but allow them to pull out a victory. He broke CJ Spillers all purpose record for a single game and the kid was just relentless in post 345 all-purpose yards Saturday.
