Bloguin Heisman Poll Week Six

Week six of the College Football Season has breezed past us. Oklahoma took Texas to the woodshed, Logan Thomas led the Hokies past the Hurricanes in a thriller, Michigan remained unbeaten, so did Kansas State, Arizona is in the market for a new coach, and South Carolina finally parted was with Stephen Garcia. Last week was week five of the Bloguin Heisman Poll as Andrew Luck jumped from third place to take a hold of the number one spot on the poll. Could Luck hold off the contenders and defend his spot this week?

1) Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 29 Points, 30.21%, 8 1st Place Votes

Season: 106/145 (73.1%), 1383 yards, 14 TDs, 2 INT, 1 rushing TD, 1 reception

* He is making it look easy in passing for 1300 yards and 14 TDs. He has the ESPN machine behind him even though, I swear he is never on TV. Numbers don’t lie however as he has his team winning and he has the stats to back it up at this point.

* The more I watched Bob Stoops’ showcasing of Landry Jones against Texas, the more convinced I became that Andrew Luck is the better candidate. Luck threw for 370 yards and three TDs against Colorado, his best single-game performance of the season and just short of his career best – and he did not play during the final 10 minutes of a 48-7 rout against Colorado. He consistently executes week to week.

* Andrew Luck hasn’t done anything to lose his position as the frontrunner and favorite. His team remains undefeated, and he has 14 touchdowns against two interceptions while completing 73% of his passes. Add to this his great college football back story, passing up NFL riches to return and complete his degree, and he’s just about a perfect representation of the sport, on and off the field: character, talent, balance, toughness, production and results. No one-year wonder can match his Heisman resume, and the accomplishments of Kellen Moore have to be discounted. Take the three worst opponents on the Stanford schedule, and Moore’s Broncos play nine just like them. Luck would shred Tulane, Toledo, Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming. The Heisman statue is not holding a cupcake.

2) Russell Wilson (QB-Wisconsin) – 19 Points, 19.79%, 3 1st Place Votes

Season: 83/111 (74%), 1391 yds, 13 TD, 1 INT, 140 yds rushing, 2 rushing TD

This Week: Indiana

* Wilson was off this week, but nothing else happened that convinced me that he has not been in the best player in college football over the first six weeks. Wilson is leading the country in passing efficiency.

– Kris Brauner, Saturday Night Slant

* Wisconsin was on a bye week after the big win against Nebraska. Wisconsin has taken the time to start up their Heisman push for Wilson by setting up a weekly conference call with the quarterback. Every Monday he will meet with the media and conduct a separate conference call briefly. Bret Bielema may not believe in Heisman campaigns in this day and age, but that is clearly what Wisconsin is organizing, and that is well deserved. Wilson says it is an honor to be discussed as a Heisman candidate because it is every player’s personal goal, but he notes that it is more a reflection on the entire team. The kid gets it and is well grounded, that is for sure.

3) Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 9 Points, 9.38%, 0 1st Place Votes

* Flavors of the week seem to crop up all the time in the Heisman discussion. But, Denard Robinson still makes too many mistakes and RG3 has lost some of his momentum. Enter Kellen Moore, who just keeps on winning and putting up impressive numbers. Due to his WAC schedule, Moore has to continue to pile up ridiculous stats, but he seems like he’s going to at least be part of the discussion.

4) Robert Griffin III (QB-Baylor) – 8 Points, 8.33%, 0 1st Place Votes

Last Week: 22/30, 212 yds, 1 pass TD, 107 yds rushing, 1 rush TD

Season: 115/143 (80.4%), 1520 yards, 19 TD, 1 INT; 280 rush, 1 Rush TD, 1 Rec

* Now is not the time to jump off the RG3 bandwagon. He may have had a down week with 8 incompletions and only 1 TD… but he also ran for 100 yards against Iowa State. No player may mean more to his team in the country.

– Matt Yoder, Awful Announcing

* Griffin’s worst performance of the season highlights how insane his first four games were. He’s hit on over 80% of his attempts and is averaging over 300 yards a game, with a whisker under 4 scores a contest. Baylor hasn’t been tested and when they are, Griffin will have to prove he’s not a fraud. Until then, he’s putting up huge numbers and deserves every mention he gets in the Heisman conversation.

5) LaMichael James (RB- Oregon)- 7 Points, 7.29%, 1 1st Place Vote

Last Week: 30 rushes, 239 yards, 7.97 ypc, 1 TD

Season: 95 rushes, 852 yards, 8 TD, 8.97 ypc, 11 receptions, 1 rec TD

This Week: vs Arizona State

* Before dislocating his elbow against Cal last week, LaMichael James once again proved that he is the most deserving rusher of this young NCAA season by gaining 239 yards on the ground in 30 carries. His season average of nine yards a carry far outstrips the competition and we can only hope that James is back on the field in a hurry.

6) Tyrann Mathieu (CB-LSU)- 5 Points, 5.21%, 0 1st Place Votes

Last Week: 1 INT, 6 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss

Season: 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 41 total tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 1,5 sacks, 2 INT, 2 TD

* The Honey Badger is a game changer and he could be the inspiration LSU needs to win a championship.

Poll Notes

– Andrew Luck has been Mr Consistency in our weekly BHP. Every single week he’s been in the Top 3 and he’s been #1 in three out of the six polls. For the first time in six weeks there is a repeat #1 and it’s Mr Luck.

– Russell Wilson and the Wisconsin Badgers had this week off and Wilson paid for it in the standings. Wilson was able to stay in second place but lost two first place votes, 5.5 points and dropped 5.73%.

– The second runner-up to the Heisman Trophy last year, LaMichael James of Oregon, made his biggest splash in the BHP so far this year as he placed 5th and received one first place vote.

– One of the early favorites in our poll, Marcus Lattimore, fell completely out of the poll this week. Remember way back in Week Three when he was the #1 vote getter? This past week was the first time in three games he rushed for over 100 yards (going for 102 yds) but it was against Kentucky so some might argue that it never happened.

– The last Pac-12 (well technically it was Pac-10 back then) QB to win the Heisman? “Hollywood” Matt Leinart in 2004.

– This week Andrew Luck takes on the Washington State Cougars. In what might be the “stat of the week” Washington State leads the Pac-12 in passing defense giving up 227.8 yards per game. Yes, you read that right….Washington State leads the Pac-12 in a defensive category. When you sit back down or revive yourself please continue reading.

– Russell Wilson takes on the Hoosiers of Indiana. Indiana is giving up 211.5 passing yards per game which ranks 8th in the Big Ten (of course that would also place them 1st in the Pac-12). Indiana has given up 11 passing TDs so far in 6 games (2nd most in the Big Ten to Minnesota).

– Kellen Moore takes on Colorado State. So far the Rams are 3rd in the MAC giving up 178 yards passing per game. Of course they’ve also played a who’s who of college football that includes New Mexico, Northern Colorado, and San Jose State.

– RG3 has the toughest task of the Top 4 vote getters as he takes his Bears to College Station to face the Aggies of Texas A&M. The good news for the Bears? The Aggies are dead last in passing defense in the pass happy Big 12 giving up a whopping 347.6 yards per game. But, the Aggies are #1 in the conference (and #2 in the Nation behind Illinois) in sacks with 21 in 5 games.

– All signs point to LaMichael James being held out of this weeks rumble against Arizona State but as of press time he has not been ruled out.

– Finally, Tyrann Mathieu and the LSU Tigers take on the Tyler Bray-less Tennessee Vols. This will be the second straight week they will be facing a back-up QB (they faced Florida w/o John Brantley last week).
