Entering Saturday’s showdown at Wisconsin, one of the great unanswered questions in college football was this: Could Oregon State possibly be as bad as their 29-28 loss to Sacramento State last weekend might indicate? Given that they fell behind 14-3 at the half, and had to rally just to force overtime, it seemed likely. Then again, if an upset happens, but no one is there to see it, maybe it just isn’t quite as bad as expected.
Well, through two quarters in Camp Randall, it certainly appears that Oregon State is as lousy as advertised. Mike Riley continues to rotate quarterbacks Ryan Katz and Sean Mannion the way a mechanic rotates front-end tires, and without James Rodgers in the lineup, it isn’t clear if the Beavers have a single explosive playmaker on their entire roster.
Of course, it’s one thing to be bad, and it’s another to be just plain inept. Such was the case when Oregon State punter Johnny Hekker attempted his second punt of the game this afternoon.
The key word of course, is “attempt,” as Hekker’s kick went negative four yards. As in, it went backwards.
To quote the movie Major League II, this undoubtedly wins the “Trojan-Enz, Boner of the Week” award.
We’ll be stunned if you see a worse play in college football all season.
