The Michigan Wolverines went into the 2007 season with a #5 pre-season ranking and dreams of a National Championship. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, nobody mentioned this to Jerry Moore and the Mountaineers from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
On their first drive, Chad Henne and Mike Hart led Michigan down the field for a score but from there it was a battle to the finish. Armanti Edwards led the underdogs to an 11 point halftime lead.
Michigan roared back to take a one point lead but Edwards and the Mountaineers gained possession of the ball with 1:37 and no timeouts. The Mountaineers drove 69 yards and kicked a field goal to go up by 2 with just 26 seconds left.
Chad Henne hit Mario Manningham with a bomb to set up a game winning field goal….but it was not to be as the Mountaineers blocked it to secure one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
Interestingly enough, if you look at Michigan’s 2014 schedule, their opener is against Appalachian State. Can lightning strike twice in the Big House?
