National Signing Day: DE Solomon Thomas brings a tree to the table, commits to Stanford

You never know what you will see on National Signing Day, and this year's edition perhaps started like no other. One of the top defensive end recruits on the board, Solomon Thomas, made his decision final with a unique approach. Thomas announced on ESPNU he would attend Stanford by whipping out a small tree on the table and putting on a pair of nerd glasses.

The glasses have become a running joke for Stanford football players lately, taking pride in the nerd stigma attached to the program for years. By competing for and winning Pac 12 titles the Stanford program has shed some of the old-fashioned views of the program, and Thomas looks to buy in to that fun.

Thomas is a five-star defensive end according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, so he should be a great addition to a Stanford program that has been thriving largely on the defensive foundation the last few years. Stanford had been the favorite to get Thomas, but Arkansas looked to be making a solid push in recruiting. This is a tough loss for the Razorbacks, but not an unexpected one.

As far as I can recall, this is the first time we have seen a tree make an appearance during an announcement. This day is just getting started folks!
