Texas continued its on-again, off-again relationship with being a decent football team on Saturday, getting a needed win over Texas Tech.
The Longhorns bounced back from a string of dismal performances in recent weeks to put together a solid all-around performance in Lubbock.
Quarterback David Ash shook off his struggles of a week ago versus Kansas to complete 11 of 19 passes for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns. His favorite target: “Magic” Mike Davis, who repeatedly beat the Red Raiders on deep balls. Davis finished the day with 4 receptions for 165 yards and a pair of scores.
Touted freshman Johnathan Gray also had possibly his best game of his rookie season. Gray carried the ball 20 times for 106 yards and proved to be the Longhorns’ most consistent threat against the Tech D.
Tech QB Seth Doege did his best to keep the Red Raiders in business. The resourceful senior field general went 26-of-44 for 329 yards and 1 TD. Too often, however, he led drives that finished with field goals instead of crossing the goal line.
It certainly wouldn’t qualify as Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz’s best effort, but his D did manage to stiffen up whenever Tech got within shouting distance of the end zone.
While Tech’s once-promising season is starting to unravel, the ‘Horns somehow find themselves in the middle of a three-game winning streak. That may be of little consolation to those close to the Texas program who don’t dig any losses. Yet, given how poorly Texas has played for stretches this season, Mack Brown can probably rest a little easier – for the next week.
