Morning Playbook – Saban being Saban

You have to love Nick Saban. Really, you do. Some coaches might love the fact that the media does nothing but sing their praises and tell them how good their team is. Not Nick Saban. He doesn't need that and he had no problem telling the media assembled in Tuscaloosa Wednesday just how he felt about the never-ending love fest some seem to have following Alabama's 41-14 thrashing of the Michigan Wolverines.

Don't bother Saban with positive energy now. He has games to win y'all! He ain't got time for that.

But in all seriousness, would we expect anything else from Saban? No, of course not. On a somewhat related note, perhaps, Chris Dufresne of the Los Angeles Times took some time to complain about USC being passed by Alabama in the AP poll.

Yesterday the Crystal Ball Run staff assembled for our latest Meeting of the Minds as we discussed who we believe should be put on guard for the rest of the season after watching week one.

Fantastic story by Dennis Dodd at CBSSports.com about Missouri quarterback James Franklin's father being saved by football.

Turns out Ohio State and Penn State are eligible for some Big Ten hardware this year.

Not everybody has handled Penn State's tragic situation with class, with t-shirts poking fun at hideous crimes found in more than one opposing fan base and beyond. With Penn State taking to the road for the first time this season USA Today asked how opposing fans will treat Penn State when they come to town. What do you think? That other football season officially kicked off last night, with the Dallas Cowboys upending the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants in MetLife Stadium. Around here we like to look at MetLife Stadium as the scene for USC vs. Syracuse this coming weekend, but we understand others don't look at things the way we do. For those looking for some NFL coverage we encourage you to check out our Bloguin friends over at This Given Sunday.

In addition to football season it is also election season. The Republicans had their big bash last week and the Democrats take their turn this week. But America needs a leader who isn't afraid to not wear pants, and we're not talking about a member of the Crystal Ball Run Staff (although…). This November, vote for the Oregon Duck, who announced his candidacy yesterday.

Our very own Aaron Torres made a guest appearance on ESPNU's UNITE last night to talk some college football. This makes it two straight weeks the guys at UNITE invited Crystal Ball Run to be a part of the show, so we are hoping this is developing in to a nice little trend. Check out Torres and his take on some of our favorite storylines heading in to week two including the Texas A&M-Florida match-up and whether or not Michigan can respond after last week. Hopefully Torres is more accurate with his take on the Wolverines than I was last week.
