Virginia Tech 20, Georgia Tech 17: Hokies Find A Way to Win in Wild Finish

Sometimes football can be a funny game, just ask Cody Journell of Virginia Tech as he went from goat to hero in a matter of one quarter in the 16th ranked Hokies 20-17 victory over ACC Coastal Division foe Georgia Tech.

Journell missed a field goal just under a minute into the 4th quarter that would've tied the game up at 10-10, but he more than made up for it by hitting the game winning 18 yard field goal in the first overtime.

It was the first ever overtime game in Lane Stadium history and it was a memorable one at that.

With the score standing at 10-7 on a Yellow Jackets field goal just inside the start of the 4th quarter these two teams were playing a game of who didn't want to win, or so it seemed.

However, just over seven minutes later the Hokies offense woke up as they scored on a 42 yard pass from Logan Thomas to Demitri Knowles to go up 14-10.

Georgia Tech wasn't about to go down without a fight and when they got the ball back with 7:46 left in the game. Tevin Washington led the Yellow Jackets on a 7 minute drive included a 4th & 6 conversion for 19 yards from Washington to B.J. Bostick and ended with another Washington completion, this one to Deon Hill for 10 yards to put the Yellow Jackets up 17-14 with just 44 seconds remaining.

The Hokies were able to make huge gains thanks to some great running and having all of their time outs left. They took the ball down to the Georgia Tech 24 yard line and put their faith in Journell who hit a 41 yard field goal to end regulation tied at 17-17.

Overtime saw Georgia Tech setting themselves up inside the Hokies 10 yard line, but on a rollout to the left it all came unraveled thanks to one bad decision by Tevin Washington, who attempted to throw the ball into the endzone while being tackled, that resulted in a game saving interception for Virginia Tech's Kevin Fuller.

The rest as they say, is history, as Journell hit the game winner.

Despite the lack of a lot of scoring Virginia Tech's Logan Thomas had a decent showing, going 21-38 for 230 yards and the two touchdowns. He also added 40 yards rushing in the win.

Just how important was this game tonight? Well, every time since divisional play was introduced the winner of this game has gone on to win the ACC Coastal division. So, if this holds true look out for the Hokies come ACC Championship Saturday.
