The Crystal Ball: Week Eleven

After the blockbuster that was Week Ten, the 2012 college football season keeps on trucking with a slate of intriguing matchups in Week Eleven. Let’s conjure up the spirits to find out what’s in store as the regular season inches closer to a close.

Florida State at Virginia Tech (Nov. 8)

Undefeated through the first 10 weeks of the season, the Seminoles now face the daunting task of a Thursday night game at Blacksburg.

Florida St. squads of the past would have probably folded in spots like this – a chilly evening contest in the middle of nowhere against the rough and tumble Hokies. FSU’s filthy defense will have this team ready to survive an ugly brawl with Frank Beamer’s bunch.

It won’t be pretty, but our crystal ball is telling us to look for the ‘Noles to make one or two explosive plays on offense that are the difference in tough, low-scoring game.

Florida State 20, Virginia Tech 17

Arkansas at South Carolina

Remember that whole Bobby Petrino thing with the motorcycle? Yeah, the crystal ball told us about that back in January. When it added that the Arkansas would hire John L. Smith, we just assumed the ball was sending us on a wild hog hunt. This baby doesn’t joke around.

The ball doesn’t think much of the Gamecocks, but it still says this one won’t work out so well for John L. & Co. South Carolina has a week off preceding this game, giving the ‘Cocks time to heal up and Steve Spurrier time to scheme.

And that’s the game within the game that the ball really seems to like here: Ol’ Ball Coach over Slappy.

South Carolina 30, Arkansas 21

Texas A&M at Alabama

Woe unto you, Aggies. You’re traveling to Tuscaloosa to take on a pissed off Alabama team that just lost to LSU and only scored three points in the process.

The ball thinks A&M will steadily improve as the season wears on under first-year head coach Kevin Sumlin. Won’t matter in this case, though. The Aggies are in for a world of hurt here, their third consecutive road trip within the SEC West.

Alabama 30, Texas A&M 13

Georgia at Auburn

Wow, somebody up there really likes Mark Richt. And by “up there,” I mean the SEC league office. The Bulldogs have such a favorable schedule for the second year in a row.

They have to watch their backs here, however. UGa humiliated Auburn a year ago, 45-7, and the Tigers have a voracious appetite for payback.

The crystal ball likes their chances to get it.

Auburn 24, Georgia 21

West Virginia at Oklahoma State

Stillwater welcomes back former OSU offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, the equivalent of a national holiday for the bartenders at Eskimo Joe’s. But will Holgo be celebrating as returning conqueror or drowning his sorrows?

The crystal ball foresees a less than hospitable visit for WVU’s head coach and his team. Led by freshman gunslinger Wes Lunt, the young Cowpokes should be hitting their stride by this point in the season. Meanwhile, the grind of a Big 12 schedule will start catching up with the Mountaineers.

OSU wins a wild one.

Oklahoma St. 42, WVU 33
