LeBron James has finally silenced (some of) his critics by helping the Miami Heat capture an NBA championship last night. Cincinnati BearCats head coach Butch Jones had a front row seat for all of last night’s action in Miami. But really, now that the NBA season is finally over, it is one less distraction from getting ready for college football, and that’s what really matters here.

The Cincinnati coach has the same agent as Miami Heat coach Eric Spolestra, if you were wondering how he picked up the nice seat. Jones also provided live updates from inside American Airlines Arena as the Heat were pulling away from Oklahoma City.

Today we will reveal our top two teams in our preseason rankings here at Crystal Ball Run. Yesterday we pulled the curtains back on our No. 4 and No. 3 teams, Oregon and LSU, respectively. We also took a look in to our own crystal ball for what will happen in week three of the 2012 college football season.

The Cotton Bowl is looking to become the home of the SEC and Big 12’s Champions Bowl, but they have something bigger in mind as well.Tommy Bain, chairman for the Cotton Bowl, confirmed that a non-profit partnership with the Dallas Cowboys will organize a bid to host the first college football championship game in Cowboys Stadium. Confirmed cities with hosting interests now includes Jacksonville, Tampa and Dallas, with more surely to be on the way.
The trial of Harvey Updyke, the accused poisoner of the Toomer’s Corner trees, will be delayed until October and could be moved. And in Pennsylvania, the jury in the Jerry Sandusky trial is in the deliberation phase and will resume Friday morning after seven hours reviewing all 48 counts against the accused child molestor and former Penn State assistant coach. Will we see a verdict on Friday?
Here’s an interesting story developing out of Texas. Texas Tech would rather pull their football team out of a game against Texas State than play the game on the Longhorn Network. Texas State has an agreement to broadcast games on Longhorn Network, which is good because it gives the new FBS football program some otherwise unavailable television exposure, but Texas Tech doesn’t feel as though they want to benefit the University of Texas by appearing on the channel. Puling out of the game would leave Texas Tech with an 11-game schedule and lead to a decent buyout cost to be paid to Texas State.
The finer details for the pending four-team playoff in college football will still have to be hashed out and agreed upon, but it does seem as though a selection committee is going to be the way to go in determining which teams get a chance to play for all the marbles. Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated says that is what helped bridge the divide and lead to fan satisfaction. Aaron Torres says the conference commissioners got it right.
